Guiseppe Codali

Ref: BU004

The Giuseppe Codali bust is located on the southern end of the Giuseppe Codali Bridge above the Dell in the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. The bust was sculptured by artist Sue Lamb and commissioned by the Codali family who presented it to the Gardens in 2014.

Guiseppe Codali arrived in Gibraltar from his native Italy in the 1870’s. He was a garden designer and horticulturist commissioned to beautify and transform the Alameda Gardens into a landscape garden and recreational area. He was also responsible for creating the gardens at the Gibraltar Law Courts as well as a number of other gardens both in Gibraltar and in Spain.

Codali most lasting legacy is without doubt the Italian sunken garden, known as the Dell - the centre piece of the Alameda Gardens - which lies beneath the adjoining Giuseppe Codali Bridge.
