This 19th Century Pattern admiralty anchors was converted into a mooring anchor by beading up one of its arms and wrapping the fluke around the shank, to avoid possible damage to ships as the tide fell. This type of was used by the Royal Navy for mooring warships in the Gibraltar harbor. Many of these mooring anchors were left on the sea-bed were lifted in the 1980’s during dredging operations around the dock area and stored on land.
A number of these anchors have now been restored and displayed in prominent locations along the western sea-front.
