The iconic red cast-iron plaques were placed in historical locations around Gibraltar between 1959 and 1975. They were the work of the Hon. Mrs. Dorothy Ellicott O.B.E., J.P., who had become the first woman to be elected to the Legislative Council and was also the Chair of the Gibraltar Museum Committee. It was the first time an attempt had been made to present the history of the Rock to visitors in the form of brief snippets of historical information, not all of which are accurate. Nevertheless, these red plaques have become a feature of Gibraltar’s historical landmarks today and are preserved as cultural monuments.

The plaques were cast in phases and recorded in three lists, however, some plaques were subsequently made but never recorded in any list. A fourth list, known as ‘Proposed Plaques’, records some, but not all, of these further additions to the inventory. A number of plaques are now, unfortunately missing. An updated list of all of these historical red plaques was first recorded by Julia Harris in a document called The red plaques of Gibraltar which was compiled in May, 2014.

In all, just over fifty old plaques have now been identified and recorded in the updated Ministry for Heritage database using the 2014 list as reference. Some plaques are no longer in situ, these have been recorded as either missing or in storage. The heritage map shows their original co-ordinates had they still been in situ for ease of reference.
